The Citizenship and Legislative Committee, most often referred to as the Community Action Program (CAP), is political climate greatly impacts the working families and if you want your voice heard, then this is the committee to join. Cap committee works on protecting worker rights, health and safety, fair trade, and new initiatives adopted by convention action.

We support candidates who fight for our unions and their families. CAP is committed to voter registration and get-out-the-vote drives, and writing letters to publicize the positions of public officials. We do not endorse any single party, but track and evaluate all candidates and their voting records. Our members are encouraged to be politically active in their communities which includes running for public office.

CAP ESSAY CONTEST

Attention High School Seniors

The Community Action Program (CAP) Region 8 is sponsoring their annual $1,200.00 scholarship essay contest at this time. This contest is open to all students scheduled to graduate from high school and planning to attend an accredited college or university as a full-time student commencing the fall term of the year.

The awards are as follows: The Winners are as follows: See 2009 Award Letter
1st Place $2,000.00 1st Place Alice Holleman – Troutman, NC  
2nd Place $1,500.00 2nd Place Hilary Cripps – Brush Creek, TN  
3rd Place $1000.00 3rd Place Seth Loeser – Hagerstown, MD  
4th Place $500.00 4th Place

Essay Topics
You may choose a topic from the following:

  • A biography of any of the great labor leaders of the past
  • The history of any of the specific International Unions, i.e., United Auto Workers, Steel Workers, Machinist etc.
  • Women’s role in labor’s past.
  • Labor history of any specific era.
  • The history of labor’s role in education.
  • The history of labor’s role in politics/ legislature/ lobbying, etc.

A cover sheet containing the following must accompany all essays:

  • Your name, social security number, address, telephone number, age, grade level and school, the name and address of the college or university where you plan to attend.
  • A statement from your principal or guidance counselor attesting to the fact that you have either submitted an application, taken entrance exams or have sent transcripts.

Essay Guidelines

  1. Topic- chooses from the previously mentioned list.
  2. Paper- plain white-8 ½” x 11”
  3. Typewritten
  4. Length- no more than 4 pages
  5. Deadline is March 31, 2009
