Veterans Committee Roll Call

July 2008

The Veterans Committee as always has been busy. We had our Region 8 Veterans Conference in June in Florida. The Conference this year was more about education for our Local Veterans Committees. Mark Peterson, Chairman of the Region 8 Veterans Council and me as Vice Chairman of the Council put the program together to address needs on the local levels. Mark did a presentation on what to do in your local committees with projects and getting involved in the community you live in. I put together a Veterans Legislation class to show the members how to get involved in politics and keep our elected representatives accountable. I also taught on the process for which a bill becomes a law and how you can be involved in every step of that process.

We are doing our drive to collect toiletry items for the homeless Veterans. We will give these toiletry kits out at the Stand Down in Greensboro on September 26th. Last year we helped about 150 homeless Veterans get assistance, this year we are expecting 200 so the need is greater to get these toiletry kits together. Any help the membership can give is greatly appreciated.

The Veterans Committee has been doing a lot of volunteer time at our new local getting things moved and set up. We look forward to making this our permanent home and all the opportunities that lie ahead.

Thanks again for all the help you give us throughout the year in helping us help those who have paid so much and ask so little; OUR VETERANS!
